ART AFTER SCHOOL TAKING THE WORLD BY STORM!!!

Art After Schooler Juliet

Not really, but I'm very happy to announce that the following, outstanding schools will host sessions of Art After School this Fall!:

Chevy Chase Elementary
Sheridan School
Lowell School
The Oyster Adams Lower School
St. Patrick's Episcopal Day School

One or two more may solidify over the summer, also.  I'm really excited to work with these schools (and with a couple talented artists who will be teaching an AAS class or two as well - more on that another day).

If you're reading this and you are an artist interested in leading a class, or you would like to bring a Make/Believe program to a school or venue near you, please give a shout: makeslashbelieve@gmail.com.

MONSTER MASH

Maggie and her monster, Rosie

Just this week, when I was getting ready to start sifting through the hundreds of photos I'd taken of this year's two very successful Winter Art Brains classes at Artisphere, my external hard drive - where I've been housing said pictures - decided to stop speaking to my computer. I'm hoping to retrieve the pictures (and the rest of my files from, oh, the last ten years or so of my life, no big deal!), but in the meantime would like to post a few I still have access to here.

For this monster-themed class with the 5-6 year old group, the campers were asked to create menu items for a fancy restaurant for monsters called Monster Mash*, considering what fine dining might mean for a furry/scaly/ten-eyeballed creature. Their mouthwatering culinary designs, along with pictures of the monsters who love them can be seen below.

*I've been asked to note here that reservations for a fine dining experience at Monster Mash must be made at least three months in advance.

L: Eyeball pizza with a side of eyeballs; R: Smelly Trash

Cooked Brains with a side of worms; a refreshing slime beverage

Brains and A Face; To drink: Blood

Roast of Flying Lamb & Chicken w/ Arms platter; Raw Brain & Spiked Worm

Brainburger w/ tomato and worms; Eyeballs with poison

CAINE'S DIY CARDBOARD ARCADE

A friend sent me this video, and I am STOKED about it. The spirit of Caine's arcade is completely exciting - the kind of thing I always hope to inspire in the kids I teach, and the kind of thing that makes me want to be a kid again myself. Or at least a grown up who spends her time doing stuff that is half as cool. It's always refreshing these days to see young people (or anyone, really) sans Smartphone and working patiently and passionately on tangible, analog pursuits like this. And I guess it's also pretty cool to see that people on the internet/on their Smartphones made the gathering at the end of this short film possible. Keep up the good work, Caine (and Nirvan)!!

More info about the project, the "flash mob" who showed up to support it, and the short film here.
