IMAGIN-ATLAS.
Youth will be asked to invent their own country or land, filling it in with drawings of the landscape, wildlife, people and history it holds.
We did this project with my Art Brains classes (this session being co-taught with me by the talented
Rachel Schmidt), and my two Art After School classes. I loved seeing what the kids came up with, especially some of the narratives that were born from it. We looked at a bunch of different maps, both factual and fictional, for inspiration. As it turns out, there is much turmoil in these imagined lands (snake pits! tar rivers! mine fields! rotten banana forests with viscious trash can creatures!) but also some rather lovely places anyone might like to visit, like Rainbow World and Cloud Island, a peaceful paradise with soft cloud beds.
